What sewing machine should I buy?
I want a sewing machine that is basic and simple. I don't need a bunch of fancy stitches and settings. Just adjustable stitch sizes, forward and backwards with the ability to do zippers.
Suggestions?
Just a correction to the post saying only zigzag machines can sew zippers. There's a foot called a "zipper foot" that slides and allows straight stitch machines to insert zippers quite nicely. We were putting zippers in garments long before there was a needle position control on sewing machines! 
As to "what machine", I suggest the FAQ here: http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm Cheapest would probably be one of the old black Singers like a model 15, 66 or 99 -- a little oil and adjustment (see the yahoo group "wefixit") and you'd be in business, probably for less than $25.
Other than that, I'd suggest Janome (who also makes a goodly number of Sears' "Kenmore" machines) for lower priced decent new machine. These are not the machines I'd pick for myself, but for occasional users, they're probably fine, and sturdy little machines. I'd especially look at the buttonhole functions on any new machine... some are much easier than others.
