Good Audition monologues for Amadeus?
I am auditioning for my high school production of "Amadeus" next week and I can't think of an auditioning monologue. I am also not sure of the tone of the monologue (whether it should be dramatic, classic, comedic, etc). I am a female freshman and has no real preference on the characters. I am also not sure if I need a song to audition, but if you could suggest one or if I do need one, that would be very helpful! Thank you!
A monologue for Amadeus should be mostly dramatic -- especially for the female parts, the character of Catarina Cavallieri is about as funny as the women get. It's been a time since I read the play Amadeus, I think that if there's any on-stage singing at all it's only only by very minor characters -- probably because it would be too hard to get opera singers who could also act at a Broadway level. But if you want to sing, sing opera, because that's all the music that turns up in Amadeus.
Generally, what you'd be best off demonstrating is the emotions of anger or frustration, so monologues that focus on that would work well. There's also a fair bit of pantomime as I remember -- a lot of the play is narrated over by Salieri while actors do a dumb show on the stage -- so something that can be accompanied with heavy gesture might be good.
You could maybe try the "I'm not hardened, Mother" monologue from George Bernard Shaw.
